The Dirty List: 'Clean' Brands That Really Aren't

The clean beauty space is booming—but not everything that glows is gold.

Many brands love to advertise as organic, non-toxic, or natural. But don’t let the sleek packaging & buzzwords fool you. When you dig into the ingredients, many so-called “clean” brands still sneak in toxins, endocrine disruptors, & synthetic additives.

At Keeping It Real Clean, we’re here to cut through the greenwashing. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about protection. Your daily self-care should support your health, not silently sabotage it.

✨ Why It Matters

Even brands that claim to be clean often use ingredients we call Dirty Disruptors—like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, & more. (Want the full list of what we avoid & why? Check out:💚Hidden Dangers in Your Products.)

Just think about how many products you use daily:

  • ➡️Shower: Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Body Scrub, Shaving Cream, etc.

  • ➡️Body Care: Deodorant, Body Lotion, Hand Cream, Perfume, etc.

  • ➡️Skincare: Cleanser, Toner, Serum, Moisturizer, Exfoliator, Mask, etc.

  • ➡️Makeup: Primer, Foundation, Concealer, Blush, Eyeliner, Mascara, etc.

  • ➡️Hair care: Shampoo, Conditioner, Heat Protectant, Hairspray, Hair Gel, etc.

  • ➡️Nail Care: Nail Polish Remover, Primer, Nail Polish, Cuticle Oil, etc.

That’s easily 30+ products a day—every single day! And yes, what goes ON your skin gets absorbed INTO your body. Even trace amounts of chemicals can bioaccumulate, leading to long-term health risks including cancer!!

Small exposures become big risks when multiplied across products, days, & years! That's why every ingredient matters.

🚫 Brands We Don’t Recommend

We’ve analyzed hundreds of brands claiming to be clean—& over 100 of them didn’t make the cut!

Some brands are cleaner than others. Some even offer products that on their own meet our standards & we’re always happy to acknowledge that. But when the bulk of a brand’s lineup repeatedly includes "Dirty Disruptors," we can’t confidently recommend them overall.

We're not here to shame or fearmonger—we’re here to keep it real.

We’re also hopeful. If these brands clean up their formulas, we’ll happily revisit & update this list. Our goal is to encourage transparency & support brands that truly prioritize your health.
